What changes when you cross the Atlantic

In the United Kingdom the pair is a six-digit sort code and an eight-digit account number, and the international form is an IBAN built from both. In the United States the pair is a nine-digit routing number and an account number of no fixed length, and there is no IBAN at all.

The bank identifier is the piece that survives the crossing. A SWIFT/BIC code names an institution in either country, which is why a payment from a US bank to a UK one needs the UK bank's BIC and the UK account's IBAN, and a payment the other way needs the US bank's BIC and its routing number.

Identifiers for other countries, including the Australian BSB, the Canadian transit number, the Indian IFSC and the German BLZ, are deliberately out of scope here rather than half-covered. Getting one of those wrong costs somebody a payment, and a page that guesses is worse than no page.

Why only two countries?

Because coverage here means having read the institutions' own published pages, and that is a bounded amount of work per market. Two markets read properly is worth more than twenty listed from a directory nobody checked.

I need a code for a bank in another country.

Ask the payee's bank directly, or ask the payee to send a screenshot of the details from their own banking app. Neither this site nor any free lookup can confirm a foreign account's details the way the bank holding it can.
